6 Beauty Favorites of 2016

Wednesday, January 18, 2017 / 3:00 PM

This is a bit overdue, considering it's 18 days into the new year and I meant to write this 18 and a half days ago. But after spending the last week or two giving makeup advice to some of my friends (actually, one of my favorite things to chat about!), it reminded me that I need to catch up on my blog drafts...

Also, who doesn't love a good favorites list? I've always struggled at the end of each year to do my annual round-up, but I think I'd like to sprinkle more of these throughout my blog (which will help with that goal I've made of creating weekly content...more on that later).

These aren't necessarily all new products that came out in 2016, just new to my favorites/routine. (Also, none of this is sponsored – I wish!)

1. Tarteist Creamy Matte Lip Paint by tarte

Sephora describes this as an "ultra-pigmented" liquid lipstick, and boy are they spot on. The shade I loved and wore all through last spring was "Twerk," which is this bold fuschia that I didn't think would look good on me until I swatched it in the store. It's a formula that goes on smoothly and lasts throughout the day, and I'm already planning my week's outfits around when I can wear it again.

2. Chocolate Bon Bons Palette by Too Faced

I am in love with Too Faced palettes, and the Chocolate Bar Eye Palette was a 2015 fave. So when I saw this new take on it, I couldn't resist. Like the Chocolate Bar, it smells like chocolate and comes in an adorable package. The colors in Chocolate Bon Bons are the perfect blend of neutrals and colors that work for my brown eyes, even though I haven't quite figured out how/when to use Earl Grey.

3. Coral Spectrum Blush Palette by Zoeva

I got this palette from a friend who works in fashion and is able to get her hands on samples that aren't always easy to find in stores. Zoeva is a German brand that, to my knowledge, sells in very, very few shops in the U.S., which makes loving this palette a bit heartbreaking. I've generally always had trouble finding the right blushes that aren't too pigmented or too light, but each of the colors on this palette seem to work. My personal favorite is the bottom left, which has pretty much been my go-to blush of 2016.

4. Makeup Eraser

I was so skeptical about this when I first saw it going around the internet, but then I bought it to test it out and it really does work. Being able to remove my makeup with just water and a wash cloth has made my skin feel so much better, and I'm not having to buy and dispose of makeup wipes by the boxful. (The downside of the Makeup Eraser TBH is that it's $20 and you can basically buy a $2 microfiber cloth and achieve the same result.)

5. Rose Lollipop Lip Balm by Lush

I put this in my general "16 things I loved in 2016" post, but it's worth repeating: I. Love. This. Lip balm. Like I noted before, it's got shea butter which absorbs into your lips to keep you moisturized, and for someone like me who has dry lips (lack of hydration, blegh), this has been a godsend.

6. Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer by Clinique

I normally don't like 2-in-1 products, or doe foot applicators, but this foundation/concealer is the exception to both. I don't wear foundation on a normal day-to-day basis, but even as a spot concealer, this works as well as my favorite concealers. I also don't feel like I need to glob on too much of this product when I do use it as a foundation, and it doesn't get cake-y or irritate my skin.

My next quest is to find a favorite moisturizer because I've discovered that living in Los Angeles tends to dry out my skin (it's been six years since I lived in California, give me a break!). Recommendations are welcome :)

  1. Oh boy moisturizers! My recs are gonna be for oily skin, so if you need serious dry skin relief these are probably not for you.
    * Clinique Super Rescue Antioxidant Night Moisturizer. not cheap but very nice and doesn't beak me out.
    * Belif The True Cream Aqua Bomb.
    * Sheet masks: I LOVE the Laniege hydrogel sheet masks from target. Also the My Beauty Diary black pearl mask, which you can buy on amazon. (their other masks are nice too)
*when all else fails I'll slather my face with the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing lotion. I don't do it often but it usually works.
*also taking your makeup off with cold cream is nice if you're in a dry climate. I had to do this for a while after i moved back to california from new orleans.
