Staying Busy While Staying Home

So... What have you been up to? It's hard to answer that question these days because everyone's answer is pretty much the same: "I'm home."

At least, that should be your answer. If you need to go out (to run errands, to go for a walk around your neighborhood, or because you're an essential worker), make sure you're following social distancing guidelines and also wearing a face covering.

But while you're sitting at home, what have you been up to? I asked on my Instagram Stories recently and got a fun insight into what my friends have been doing: gardening, writing music, playing Animal Crossing, and more.

I'm going into week 4 of this COVID-induced isolation, and have been finding a variety of ways to keep myself busy and distracted. This period has brought back some of the worse parts of a certain type of loneliness I felt in New York by the end of living there that hasn't been fun, so I'm trying to stay positive and not let myself spiral too much.

If you're feeling the same – or looking for something new to add to your routine (aside from work, if you're working from home) – here's what I was up to last week:

What I've Been Watching/Listening To:
  • Amanda recently started re-watching Community, which made me want to re-watch it too. I don't think I actually ever finished the series, but now that it's on Netflix, now's the perfect time.
  • There's a new season of Top Chef on right now! It's an all-stars season and based in LA.
  • I recently checked out The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia on Netflix. It's a very Disney Channel-esque show, but I've been intrigued by Netflix's original programming for young adults because they're actually quite good (see: Alexa & Katie). The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia is a bit of a wild premise, but the episodes are short, the humor is easy, and it's a good way to fill the silence while multitasking.
  • Things that still hold up that I watched recently: Space Jam and Finding Nemo
  • Reply All's "Attic and Closet Show" is wonderful and sad and hopeful and everything in between.

What I've Been Doing:
  • You can never clean enough. I can't tell if I'm just noticing the messiness more now that I'm home 24/7 or if being at home more equals more mess. Either way, a clean home is a happy home.
  • I made cheese! I saw this kit on a BuzzFeed list recently and bought it, and it was maybe the most fun I had in awhile. I mean...it was stressful, but it was still fun, even when I realized I messed up.
  • My favorite new app is the New York Times' crossword app. When you first download it, you get a free trial to access everything, but even if you don't want to pay (I don't), you still get The Daily Mini (mini crossword puzzles) for free. It's a fun way to start the day while drinking coffee.
  • I downloaded the Sims 4 sometime last year when Origin made it free, so with cheats enabled, I've been doing random builds. It passes time pretty quickly and can be a fun challenge.
  • Kristen got me a Tamagotchi for Christmas and I was too skittish to hatch it because I didn't know if I'd have the time commitment to keep it alive. But quarantine is the perfect time to do it! It's pretty low maintenance, though I do think that if I were working/living my life as normal, it would be annoying to keep up with. So far I haven't killed it! It's 6 years old (it ages about a year per day) right now.
